The Company:Care for Kenya is a fast-growing community-based 501(C)3 non-profit that works to empower the lives of women affected by HIV/AIDS at a women's center in Kibera slum. The Care for Kenya team is creating a sustainable, long-term approach that will provide economic opportunities and societal improvements for generations to come. www.careforkenya.org and http://vimeo.com/41549474The Internship:Care for Kenya is seeking a dynamic, energetic and experienced individual to assist with writing grants for fundraising purposes. The projects will include both grant research and development, as well as writing LOIs, RFPs and proposals. The candidate will research and apply for grants from a wide variety of governmental, private, and public foundations and institutions. Additionally, the candidate will be able to proactively contact prospects and develop productive relationships with potential funding agencies. Although supervised by a staff member experienced in fundraising techniques, the grant writer manages the entire grant writing process, building on existing resources for grant writing. The successful candidate will be able to move into this position, with its existing staff, and establish him/herself as an in independent worker who also works well collaboratively.This is an excellent opportunity to learn about grant writing for an international medium-sized nonprofit. Flexible schedule minimum 25 hours/week (full-time preferred); minimum 3 month commitment. Start date: immediate. This is an unpaid position. Please submit resume, cover letter, the contact information of two professional references, and 2 writing samples.Primary Responsibilities:- Develop grant proposals for foundations, persuasively communicating Care for Kenya's mission and programs to potential funders- Communicate by phone and email with potential funder, including but not limited to: submitting and responding to requests for information, submitting official LOIs, and thanking funders for grants- Conduct prospect research- Maintain database of potential funders- Maintain funding calendar, including maintaining records of renewals, prospects, and related special projects- Prepare reports to foundations- Report to Executive Director and collaborate with staffRequirements of a Strong Candidate:- MBA/Masters candidate in a relevant field [I.e., Public Health, Development, Fundraising, Philanthropy, Women's Studies]- At least 1 year of demonstrated experience grant writing for non-profits- Excellent persuasive writing skills a must- Strong research skills- Knowledge about social and political issues in Africa- Strong written and oral communications- Experience with Microsoft Office programs and Google Docs' collaborative site- Ability to think outside the box- Attention to detail and ability to troubleshoot one's own work- Strong self-starter- Ability to work well on a team- Prior experience or dedication to fundraising/development projects is preferred- Passionate about Care for Kenya's mission and women's empowerment [ PLEASE DO NOT APPLY WITHOUT MEETING ALL QUALIFICATIONS] Compensation: unpaid This is at a non-profit organization.
